After Nathan and Else jumped, just beyond the level crossing in Ellecom,
they met a passer-by who pointed them towards Dieren—to the priest. It was a route full of risk and uncertainty.
Before long, they passed a guarded post at a German munitions depot. In the dark, they continued on and turned into Hogestraat. On the corner stood Hotel De Kroon, requisitioned by the Germans. Against all odds, they managed to pass the hotel unseen, even though the curfew was already in force.
A little further on, they reached the presbytery, where they knocked, hoping for help. Directly opposite the presbytery was the office of the German police. Yet Nathan and Else managed to get inside safely, during curfew and without being seen—a moment when courage, chance, and humanity came together.
