Early Life and Childhood
Frans Houben grew up in difficult circumstances. At the age of six, he was placed in a Roman Catholic boys’ boarding school, where for many years he faced humiliation, abuse, and sexual abuse. This period left a profound mark on him and would later play a role in his artistic development and personal processing.
During his youth, Houben developed a fascination with drawing and creative work, which ultimately formed the foundation for his later life as an artist. After his youth, he travelled the world for a long time, immersing himself in various visual arts such as sculpture, painting, and glass art.
Glass Artist and Studio in Ootmarsum
After years of wandering, Frans Houben eventually settled in Ootmarsum. There he opened his own studio and Galerie Frans Houben, on what is now known as “Frans Houbenplein”. In his studio he often works late into the night, shaping glass in kilns into unique works of art. His style is defined by bold colours, pure simplicity, and emotion drawn straight from his personal world.
The works in his gallery are expressive and energetic, as Frans Houben seeks to unite pure simplicity with emotional depth. He draws inspiration from his own feelings and memories, and believes that creative and personal freedom are essential to your development as a person and as an artist.
